in the promotion and activities of your business - the Angus breed
- you'll enjoy it more, get more out of it and meet the greatest people in
Virginia.
Any
resident of Virginia or anyone with land or Angus cattle interests in Virginia,
is eligible for membership. The dues are based in the type of operation maintained,
purebred or commercial and on the number of head in the herd. An Associate
Membership without voting privileges is available to out of state breeders.
Such dues are payable annually.
Membership in the Virginia
Angus Association entitles you to...
• Permanent Headquarters
Your Association is staffed with two full time employees at its own Headquarters
Building. A phone call to (540) 337-3001 or an
e-mail will provide you their assistance.
• Market Expansion
Your Association sponsors several auction sales throughout the State for
its members. It also manages and assists with individual breeder auctions
and provides private treaty sales opportunities. The Executive Director,
Dan Wells, is available to advise on market planning and development. Selling
your cattle to advantage is absolutely necessary.
• Angus Shows
As an aid to your promotion and merchandising efforts, the Virginia Breeder
Show is held annually, as well as several show and sale combinations. The
Angus Show at the Virginia State Fair, numerous County Fairs as well as Regional
and National Shows are also available to display your production. Advice and
counsel on both selection and preparation is available from your Association.
• Breed Promotion
To complete the promotion program your Executive Director, Dan Wells, attends
steer shows, feeder calf sales, meetings and field days to spread the word
about Angus advantages and encourage the founding of new herds. News releases,
radio and newspaper advertising are all used to promote your breed.
• Youth Program
An important function is the sponsorship of an active program for our youth.
About $2,000 is raised annually for members for premiums at the State Junior
Show, State Fair, and County Shows. Assistance is also provided for their
participation in National Shows, Events, and Showmanship contests.
• The Virginia Angus Handbook
Annually the Association distributes, free, a Handbook filled with up-to-date
information concerning your herd operation written by successful fellow breeders,
management tips and techniques, preparation for shows and sales, performance
programs, selling, selection, health, and more!
• Free Subscription to the
'Angus Topics'
Your membership dues include a subscription to this monthly publication. This
provides you a current report on State, National and International Angus news,
show and sale activities, as well as National Advertising.
• Field Service
Your Executive Director, Dan Wells, is a professionally trained and
knowledgeable cattle person. He is available to the membership for counsel,
advice and assistance in:
- Herd Management
- Selection and Grading
- Performance Analysis
- Pedigree Analysis
- Herd Improvement Planning
- Herd Sire Selection
- Herd Sire, Brood Cow and Replacement Heifer Acquisition
- Selecting Sale Cattle, Preparation of Sale Cattle, Sale Planning, Sale
Management, and Private Treaty Sales.
• Association
Be associated with fellow Angus breeders in an organization devoted to the
promotion of Angus cattle, particularly Virginia Angus cattle.
